Grant to Morgan County Schools
Press Release
January 23, 2001
Oakdale and Coalfield schools are receiving $1,000 for the purchase of water quality testing equipment and materials. Tennessee Paddle and TVA's Melton Hill Watershed Team made $500 available to each school. Tennessee Paddle is a non profit organization which hosts the annual Festival in Wartburg. This year's Festival is April 6-8.
At Oakdale, the equipment will be used to monitor the quality of the Emory River and the area around the school. The Walden's Ridge Rural Trust has also committed funds for teacher training and field studies.
At Coalfield, the funds will support the Adopt-A-Watershed program. The program teaches students to look at a watershed holistically and assess its conditions including how to link local land use to water quality.
Teachers at both schools are active with the Emory River Watershed Association that facilitated the proposals to
Tennessee Paddle and TVA. In announcing the award, Dale Robinson of Tennessee Paddle said, "It's wonderful to see these kinds of initiatives taking place in the schools and we want to encourage each student's commitment to the environment."
