Hiking The Trails at
Tennessee Paddle Festival

HikingVolunteers from the Cumberland Trail Conference will offer hikes on the Obed Wild & Scenic River Segment, and Frozen Head Segment of the Cumberland Trail on Friday and Sunday during the Tennessee Paddle Festival for the Obed.

Friday, April 6, 2001

Obed Wild & Scenic River Segment of the Cumberland Trail - 4 miles roundtrip, easy. We will see fantastic rock formations, wildflowers, cove hardwood forest and the famous Alley Ford crossing of the Obed River.  This stretch of trail is noted for its fantastic rock formations, bluffs and dripping springs. Meet at 9:00 am at the Picnic Day Area parking lot on the Wartburg side of Nemo Bridge. Bring lunch, water, and rain gear.

Sunday, April 8, 2001

Bird Mountain Hike on the Frozen Head Segment of the Cumberland Trail – 7 miles roundtrip, moderate. Frozen Head is one of the best parks in the state for spring wildflowers --- you'll probably see upwards of 40 species. Hike is rated moderate because of the steep climb at the beginning; but the remainder of the hike is easy. The hike will begin at the base of Bird Mountain and ascend 1,800 feet to the crest and Castle Rock.  After following the crest for 2 miles, with panoramic views of the Cumberland Mountains and the Gobey Valley, we will descend on an old jeep road. Bring lunch, water and rain gear. Meet at 9:00 am at the Frozen Head State Park Visitor Center. Bring water, rain gear and a snack.

Pre-registration for these hikes is requested. Please e-mail and let them know which hike and how many in your group so they know how many hikers to expect. For the Sunday hike, you can let them know at the Cumberland Trail Conference exhibit booth at the Festival site on Saturday.
