Race For The Obed - April 7

Sponsored by
Dagger

Important: Be sure to see March 6 updates below!

The race will be held Saturday April 7 on Clear Creek, beginning at Jett Bridge (on Genesis Road) and finishing at Lilly Bridge. The race distance is a distance of 2 ½ miles with a gradient is 23 ft./ mile with frequent Class II-III rapids. For more info on these areas check the "Trips/Runs" page and then look at the general description for "Jett to Lilly to Nemo" page at the lower portion of the navigation bar to the left.

There will not be Class groupings other than men and women's. Kayaks, Open Boat and C-1 paddlers will be grouped together. The event is a solo race.

Thanks to Dagger there will be prizes winners of the men's and women's divisions and lots of picture taking so smile during the entire trip!

Club Competition

Too make it a tad bit more interesting there is also going to be a "club trophy" this year. The first three persons from a specific registered club who cross the finish line (or best time if we have to stagger start times due to entries) will have bragging rights for the year and the name of the club will be placed on the "Plateau Platter" or the "Obed Obelisk" or the "Clear Creek Chalice" or whatever we decide to name the official trophy. Stay tuned on that.

This is free flowing water with the associated hazards. If water levels are too high or too low, the race may be cancelled. Each individual competitor should exercise his or her own personal judgment whether or not to run the river the day of the race. River difficulty changes significantly with changes in water level.

Update - April 6, 2001  (4:15 pm)

The Race for the Obed has been changed. The race will be from Nemo Bridge to Camp Austin. Festival organizers ask that spectators go to the start at Nemo Bridge to watch from there. Parking at Camp Austin is very limited and could be congested. Plan to be at Nemo Bridge by 10 am to watch. A shuttle bus will be available from Union Planters Bank in Wartburg leaving at 9 am and returning to Wartburg after the start of the race. Race results will be announced at the festival.

Racers need to report as previously scheduled to the Ranger Station.

WECO (AM 94 & 101.3 in Wartburg) and WIMZ (103.5 in Knoxville) have been advised of our changes.

Register

Final Registration and Orientation will be held at 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. at the Obed Ranger Station in downtown Wartburg. We will shuttle vehicles to the assembly point at the Jett Bridge put-in. Please do not show up late.

A registration fee of $10/boat, a registration form and a signed waiver is required to enter the race. These must be postmarked by March 28th. Download & complete the Registration and Waiver forms. (Note these are Word documents. If prompted for a password when downloading, click "cancel" and it should grant access for most browsers. An alternate method is to right click on the file name, then "Save Target As" to save to your hard drive.)

Or use the Acrobat combo form for the registration and the waiver forms.

After March 28th, the registration fee cost is $20/boat.
