Rivers 2000 Project
In celebration of the Obed's role in hosting
the Pass the Paddle event as part of the national Rivers 2000
Project Governor Sundquist proclaimed April 7-9,
2000 as Rivers
2000 Weekend in Tennessee.
We're proud to
have hosted Tennessee's participation in the ceremonial Pass the Paddle event organized as part of the
Rivers 2000
Project. The Tennessee Scenic Rivers Association is the state coordinating group for this activity and we're proud that they have decided to receive the Paddle from Kentucky's Division of Natural Resources, courtesy of the Bluegrass Wildwater Association at the Festival on April
8, 2000.

The three R's of Rivers 2000 were:
Recognition - of the water and related land resources themselves, and of the people and institutions who work together to ensure their value to us for the future
Recreate - let's get out and enjoy the vast opportunities our rivers and streams provide while we renew our personal interest in them; and
Revitalize - the natural, human and economic resources associated with our rivers and our commitment to proper stewardship of these important resources.

Pass the Paddle along with other Rivers 2000 activities stressed that rivers and watershed are common community resources. As such, no one single entity or organization is can or should be, expected to be responsible for their future and well being. The forests, croplands, wetlands, rangelands and riparian areas are the building blocks of watershed and as, public and private stewardship of these resources is the first step toward clean water and pollution prevention.
